Facial recognition can sound a little intimidating.

For many of us, our first thought might be surveillance, privacy concerns or something straight out of a science-fiction movie.

And that's exactly why Debbie wanted to sit down with Sean Borg from ABT Security.

With 37 years of experience in the electronic security industry and around eight years working with facial recognition, Sean has seen just how quickly this technology has evolved.

But what makes his perspective interesting is that the conversation isn't simply about what facial recognition can do.

It's about how we can use it responsibly.

Sean explains that facial recognition can deliver some incredible outcomes across industries including gaming, retail, counter-terrorism and aged care, while still protecting people's privacy and rights.

One of the biggest themes throughout the conversation is privacy by design.

Rather than collecting and storing everyone's information, Sean explains how systems can be designed to identify specific people when necessary, while quickly removing information from people who aren't on a relevant database.

And when it comes to facial recognition, accuracy matters too.

A false match isn't just a technical error. It can have a real impact on someone's experience, privacy and reputation.

That's why Sean believes both the technology and the way it is deployed need to have strong safeguards in place.

He also talks about the importance of privacy impact assessments, transparency and accountability, and why businesses need to think carefully about why they are using facial recognition and what problem they are actually trying to solve.

But perhaps the most fascinating part of the conversation is looking ahead.

Sean sees a future where facial recognition and biometrics could become part of everyday life, from unlocking cars and homes to making banking and other services more seamless.

The challenge is making sure innovation doesn't come at the expense of privacy.

For Sean, the two don't have to be opposites.

Technology can create better outcomes while still protecting people's rights.

And as facial recognition continues to evolve, understanding how the technology works and how it should be used, is becoming more important for all of us.
